How many days (or weeks) does it take to clear cargo from a sea port?

My husband frequently works overseas and often has to ship his tools ahead of him for a job. The shortest amount of time has been 3 weeks for areas in the Carribean and South America. It has taken as long as 5 weeks for his stuff to clear. Good luck
